MENNONITE POWER & POLITICS

made a signRhubarb #33 Call for submissions – Deadline
April 1, 2013

We are looking for new, unpublished work about or involving power and politics in some way from writers and artists who self-define as Mennonites, whether practicing, declined or resistant; we also accept writing and visual art by non-Mennonites about Mennonites. We’d like to see a cultural conversation on the topic from many different perspectives and with diverse approaches and styles. This is the third and final themed Rhubarb issue featuring taboo subjects rarely talked about in polite Mennonite society, the first two being Money & Sex.

Does a Mennonite heritage affect elected politicians making laws for Caesar? How do women of Mennonite heritage exercise power in the 21st century after generations of Kinder, Kueche, Kirche? (Children, kitchen, church)?  Is the Mennonite church ready, or is it irrelevant? Are we still turning the other cheek? Are violence and anger, its repression and excesses, endemic to Mennonite patriarchy? Are Mennonites passive aggressive? How about you?
