SIT DOWN – a poem by George Bowering
Oh, yeah, I’m tired of “despair”.
I thought I was tired of despair before
I shared it. Giving you a little &
me a little, & a little
for whatever person askt.
I mean despair as a poetic theme
before it gets to be a poetic theme,
I mean knowing it’s moved in
& settled down, jacket
over the back of the chair.
Now I can never sit down
without knowing despair’s been there.
But I’m tired, & when I’m, tired
I want to sit down, & despair, he’s
used to using the best chair in the house.
