Listening, Tonight

Another TimeQuickly then. It’s past my bedtime. I stayed up to watch Another day Another Time, (on netflix) a concert film produced by T-Bone Burnett and the Coen brothers (yes there were other names, who can remember) as the music that inspired the Coen brothers film Inside Llewelyn Davis, which I haven’t seen yet. At 1 hour 44 minutes it’s about 15 minutes too long, but the recording and the music is just gorgeous. I keep buying T-Bone Burnett records and getting disappointed because they are not as brilliant as the work he did putting the Rolling Thunder Revue together, or the concert footage I watched this evening. meticulously recorded, the engineers or camera people were nowhere to be seen, though mikes were everywhere. Lovely to see Patti Smith,  Joan Baez and Jillian Welch on the same bill, but it was Rhiannon Giddens that was the highlight for me whether she was singing the blues or a Celtic tune. And Oscar Issac singing the hell out of “Green Rocky Road,”  a homage to Dave Van Ronk who owned that song back in the day. The one conceit that was a bit foolish was how this show was like singing around a campfire, and New York was the campfire. I think Bonfire of the Vanities maybe….but really disregard anything resembling story, and listen to the music sweet music.
