Description
Rhubarb announces a playwriting contest sponsored by the Winnipeg Mennonite Theatre Society and the Mennonite Literary Society, with up to $1,500 in prize money. Playwrights who self-identify as Mennonites are asked to submit original one-act plays, preferably, but not necessarily, on a Mennonite theme of up to thirty minutes. Plays cannot have been previously published or performed. Submissions of one-act plays on a Mennonite theme will also be accepted from playwrights who are not of Mennonite heritage.

Judges
Patrick Friesen has published numerous books of poetry and has written several stage and radio plays, including The Shunning and The Raft have been produced by Prairie Theatre Exchange in Winnipeg as well as in various guises across the country and on radio. His book A Broken Bowl was a finalist for the 1997 Governor General’s Award.
Maureen Hunter is one of Canada’s most accomplished playwrights. She is the author of Wild Mouth, Vinci, Atlantis,and Transit of Venus, the first Canadian play ever produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company of Britain. Her work has been produced extensively in Canada, Britain, and the U.S., by CBC and BBC Radio, and has been nominated for two Governor General’s Awards, two Dora Mavor Moore Awards, and the Lou Siminovitch Prize in Theatre.

The entry fee is $20.There is a limit of two entries per playwright and copyright remains with the playwright. Please provide all contact information, including your name, address, and email on a cover sheet, without your name appearing on the entry itself. Winnipeg Mennonite Theatre (WMT) is a not-for-profit amateur community-theatre company founded on the traditions of community service and a love of theatre. WMT productions range from dramas and comedies to musicals and operas, including both classic and contemporary plays, as well as new plays on Mennonite stories or themes by local writers.
