Poetry By Post

monkey ranchWhen I was growing up in Gretna I would order books by mail from the University of Manitoba Extension Library. (boy, Hagios, 2012) Over the holidays I once again received books in the mail, this time direct from House of Anansi and Brick Books, bought and paid for.

I’m not a great believer in New Year’s resolutions but I will buy and read more poetry in 2013. I have been reluctant to review poetry for any number of reasons, not least trying to stay out of trouble with friends, colleagues and potential publishers, but with limited success, so I will give up staying out of trouble for 2013 and venture a thought or an opinion now and then about the poetry I read. We’ll see how it goes.

The books of poetry I am reading now, having finished A.F. Moritz’s Griffin winning The New Measures are:

Chaser by Erin Night (Anansi)
A Doctor Pedalled Her Bicycle over the River Arno by Matt Rader (Anansi)
I see my love more clearly from a distance by Nora Gould Brick Books
gg winner monkey ranch by Julie Bruck (Brick Books), with my favourite cover lot, just edging out Chaser.

TodayI have started Sharon Thesen’s A Pair of Scissors (Anansi 2000, on sale this holiday) having been a fan since The Beginning of the Long Dash.
Though I’ve fallen behind, I’m looking forward to catching up with a decade of her poetry in 2013 one book at a time.
