In Praise of the Two Sided Mattress – The search begins

No-Flip1I’m shopping for a new two-sided mattress.  I am spending more time in bed than I like, recovering from surgery, and it’s just underlining my absolute loathing of our expensive fat one-sided mattress. It’s all of two years old, on a ten year warranty, but more uncomfortable than the two sided mattress we replaced (purchased in 2000), now in our guest-room. We still get compliments on its comfortable sleep from our guests, while we toss and turn and wake up with aching body parts that should not be aching.

The trend toward one-sided mattresses began in 2000, ostensibly when the fire regulations changed and made it cheaper to have a one- sided sleeping surface.  The 2-sided mattresses were phased out by most major manufacturers, promising the new one-sided mattresses were actually an improvement because you didn’t have to turn them, flip them or whatever, oh so hard to do! Plus the warranties are still for 10 years.  It seems, in my own experience, and by a quick look around the web,  they don’t last even half as long as a two-sided mattress. It’s time, fellow uncomfortable  sleepers, to give the one-sided mattresses the  heave ho.

Check out the web and you will find quite a discussion on the subject with the one sided defenders usually, if you look close enough, sellers of the one-sided -mattress.  To claim the one-sided warranty, the company sends someone out with a ruler to determine whether the indentations are deep enough to qualify for a replacement.  Right.

I’ve started some on-line research and will post again when I find a good locally made two sided coil mattress to replace the crappy Simmons or Sealy piece of crap I’m trying to sleep on now.  Recommendations please – comments are enabled.

I know there are some good mattresses in Montreal, if it’s close enough to you and you’d like to take a look. I wish you the best in finding a mattress.

Mr. Mattress is a store in Vancouver that sells only tw0-sided mattresses. I’m sure that if you talk to the owner, Richard, that delivery to where ever you are can be organized. If not, he might be able to find you another supplier near by to you. Hope that helps!

Thanks! I’ve only found one supplier in Winnipeg so far, and they only have two kinds to choose from. I do like to source local, but Vancouver may a good option. Thanks.
